The Dos and Don’ts of tire buying

Many people don’t realize that tires are the most important safety feature on every vehicle. Your tires provide the only connection between your car and the road.  Lifesaving technologies like anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control cannot do their job if the tires don’t have a good grip on the road.

We have gathered a short list of dos and don’ts for when it comes time to purchase your next set of tires.

DON’T spend too little on tires
Cheap tires are cheap for a reason, they are poorly designed.  This leads to increased stopping distances and adds risk to already risky emergency maneuvers.  Tires have a traction rating found on the tire itself, always purchase tires with A or AA rating vs B or C.

DON’T spend too much on tires
Well-known tire brands do provide a consistent high level of quality but don’t overlook lesser known tire brands that produce quality products at a lower cost.  Talk to a Whitecars family tire specialist or service specialist for recommendations.

DON’T go straight to the tire from the OEM
Car manufacturers find an overall tire that provides acceptable performance for all weather conditions and all driving terrains or might choose comfort over handling or handling over tread life. When you talk to a Whitecars family tire specialist we will match the best tire to your daily driving challenges.

Do buy 4 tires at once
It’s best to replace all 4 tires at once, but if a damaged tire cannot be repaired it is best to replace its partner on the other side and put them in the rear.  WHY you ask?  This will help the car keep its stability and predictability in a panic swerve.  Older tires in the rear will increase the likelihood to spin out regardless if your car is front or rear wheel drive.

Do have realistic expectations
Not one tire can do it all! Performance tires will wear out faster or a more comfortable riding tire may be less agile.  Talk to our tire specialists about possible tradeoffs of the tires you are looking at.

DO buy 2 sets of tires
Do you use the same pair of shoes for hiking, jogging, walking through snow and dancing?  No you don’t.  If you live where it snows buy a proper set of winter tires to use in the winter.  Winter tires are designed to keep your car going in the direction you want when the roads are covered with snow and ice.  When summer arrives you can look for tires that perform better in rain, have better handling on hot roads or a longer tread life.
